I am a dance instructor, professional performer and choreographer. I get paid to dance and I'm thankful. I started my own dance company, Universal Dance Destiny, in 2004 that grew in popularity in the year 2007 in MN. We do many genres of dance including traditional West African, social African "Coupe'/Decalle'", Hip hop, Break dancing, and Latin. I am well connected to a variety of different performers in the Twin Cities in which I hire to collaborate with such as; talented beat-boxers, drummers, spoken word artist and more. You can get more info about my company on our website: www.universaldancedestiny.com. Our studio is located at:
Hennepin Center for the Arts
528 Hennepin Ave., Studio 1 (1st floor)
Minneapolis, MN 55403
My company and I have been featured in numerous newspapers and magazines in the Twin Cities. In January of 2007, I was interviewed and featured in a documentary tittled "A People Torn", about Liberians living in Minnesota. To view, log on to www.startribune.com/liberia and click on the link "Music's sustaining rhythms". You can also find all these articles on the web (google, yahoo, askjeeves, etc.), but you have to type in my full name, Edna Stevens Talton. Talton was my married name that is basically still stuck on me without a choice.
Though I am Liberian born, I was raised in America.....so I can relate culturally to both worlds. My kids were born in the US as well and they are mixed with spanish (their Dad is from Panama). Though I am now a citizen of the US, I will never loose my roots. I want to take my kids to Liberia one day too.
I love to party at the Afrikan Club in MN and I know alot of people when I go there. But I've never advertise my company there other than doing a performance at the club a while back. My dancers and I did do a show with Sundayger Dearboy. On the other hand, we perform all the time in the American community. They show us lots of love and support. I don't mix business with pleasure....that's one of the main reason that average Liberian haven't seen any of my shows. Most of our people do not like to pay to see a performance...they don't go to Theater's, Festivals, Parades and events that are non-Liberian. Because of this mentality, my own close assocites that I party with knows nothing about what I really do. On another note, I am one of the Liberian Calender Girls 2008...and big up to Charles and Racheal who did include my company's info in the calender.
Our goal is to tour the mid-west with a show I created, produced, directed and perform in, called "African Roads, American Streets". It's a story about my life coming from Africa to live in America. I learn the culture and ways of my new home...then I grow up and marry an American (a true story). The entire production is danced.....using live drumming, African dancing, new skool Hip hop and Break dancing to depict the events. The show did well here in MN. but my dream is to perform one day in Liberia for my own people. The cast consist of 25 (on the road) to 40 performers (locally). I also run my own dance school in Minnesapolis that is a division of UDD. I work hard so I party hard occasionally.
I enjoy meeting people but I can't stand haters and a female that puts man before God. Especially when they think they're the sh@# when instead their self esteem is super low because of their lack of strength to leave a F#$^ed up man. Also, I detest females that always wants to compete with their so-called friends. While in reality they can't even bath in that person bath water...lol. So when I run into low self esteem females like that, I keep my distance. I got a beautiful daughter that I need to be an example for. But, above all things I love Jesus and pray to God every day. Until then....check out our video below....performing for Boston Scientific Diversity Week. Clip 1& 2 - Coupe'/Decalle'. Clip 3 Hip Hop.
